Sydney Women’s 7s moves to Summer

A new Sydney Women’s Club 7s competition will commence from September 14th 2024 running across the summer period with a final tournament on March 1st 2025. With seven tournaments to be held in Sydney and surrounds, this competition will replace the Sydney Women’s 7s winter competition ongoing.

After what we all acknowledge as a disruptive winter season in 2024, the Sydney Women’s Rugby Union (SWRU) board in conjunction with 2024 participating 7s clubs have agreed that now is the time to shift the 7s competition into the traditional summer period.

The dates for the new competition are as below. Locations are still being determined and nominations for hosting are welcome.

  • Round 1 – September 14, 2024
  • Round 2 – October 5, 2024
  • Round 3 – November 2, 2024
  • Round 4 – November 23, 2024
  • Round 5 – January 19, 2025
  • Round 6 – February 16, 2025
  • Round 7 – March 1, 2025

Background

The SWRU 7s competition commenced in the 2018 winter season to provide an opportunity for new players to participate in rugby, especially with an increase in interest after the 2016 Olympics. There are now 28 clubs in Sydney and over 100 in NSW with female teams competing on a regular basis.

With the increase in Xs and XVs rugby union in Sydney, and acknowledgement of increased competition from other sports, the 7s competition has had a decrease in participation. The winter weather has significantly impacted the competition and doesn’t support a 7s tournament event even when it is on.

The new competition has received input from participating clubs, Rugby Australia and NSW Rugby to align tournament dates with existing regional and representative programs and maximise the opportunity for players at all levels to compete.
